One day, I asked myself a question that wouldn’t let me go:
“Who taught the Western world to prioritize excellence, innovation, and structure?”
Look at their governments, economies, and technologies, they’re built on systems that work. Meanwhile, Africa, despite its vast resources and brilliance, remains dependent on the very nations we should be competing with.
This isn’t about blame. It’s about awakening.
We have the land, the intellect, the culture, so why are we still waiting for others to lead us?
"The difference between progress and dependence is not color, it’s mindset. Until we stop borrowing creativity, we will keep forfeiting destiny."
S. Olamilekan Isreal

Look around, many white-dominated societies have systems that prioritize responsibility, structure, excellence, and forward-thinking. From the way they run their governments to how they build technology, you can see a mindset that pushes for growth and improvement.
But then I look at us , Africans. And I ask myself: Why are we still so dependent on the West? Why do we lean so heavily on systems and products created by others, when our lands are overflowing with natural resources and intelligent people?
This isn’t about blaming ourselves. No.
This is a wake-up call. A moment of honest reflection.
We have the raw materials. We have the brainpower. We have the stories, the heritage, the soul. But still, we look to the West for validation, innovation, and even direction.
That’s when a crazy thought crossed my mind.
What if we swapped places for a year?
Imagine this: Westerners move to a country like Nigeria, and we Nigerians move to China. Both groups live and work in each other’s systems. After one year, what do you think would happen?
Here’s my theory: The Western countries, now in African hands, would begin to shine. There would be a burst of energy, innovation, and transformation. And the once-flourishing countries left behind might begin to slow down. Not because of the people, but because the mindset shapes everything.
You see, the real issue isn’t race, or talent, or even resources.
The real issue is mindset.
Too often, we’ve been shaped by a mindset of dependency. We’ve inherited traditions that resist change. We’ve clung to cultural beliefs that don’t challenge us to innovate. And instead of rewriting the narrative, we wait , hoping for help, hoping for change, hoping for a miracle.
But here’s the truth:
God gave us all the same brain , and it will only produce what we program it to think.
If we don’t stretch our minds toward transformation, creativity, and excellence, then we shouldn’t expect God (or anyone else) to come down and build our cities for us.
Change begins when we decide to think differently.
And so, I’ve made up my mind: If I can’t change the whole continent, I’ll at least plant seeds. I’ll write books, create conversations, and reach those who are ready to think bigger, because even one inspired mind can spark a movement.
Yes, many people avoid knowledge. Yes, culture has swallowed us up for breakfast in some ways. But it’s not too late. The same fire that built the skyscrapers in New York and the factories in Shanghai exists in us too.
We just need to light it.
We don’t need to borrow greatness, we need to become it.
Let’s stop admiring skyscrapers abroad, let’s build them here.
Let’s stop begging for aid, let’s create wealth.
Let’s stop waiting—let’s start leading.
The fire that built New York and Shanghai burns in us too. Let’s light it.
